A Post to be named later
On Friday, the Tigers traded Mike Maroth to the Cardinals for the notorious "player to be named later". Like the Ledezma trade, it was made to clear up some roster space with several players retuening from the DL.
I like Maroth. He evolved into a very effective pitcher. He seemed like a likeable guy in his interviews. Most of all, he enured that God-awful 2003 season in which he lost 21 games. To his defense, most of those losses weren’t his fault; he had AA and AAA caliber player trying to provide him major league run support.
Such a season might have crushed the ego of most pitchers, but Maroth took it all in stride. I was glad to see him make it to the World Series last season. I wish he could have stuck around for the day when the Tigers win it all.
He will be missed. Definitely a good pick up for the Cardinals, who are in need of some pitching.
I’ll be in Atlanta later today. Center field, the guy in the Tiger jersey.
Odds N Ends
The Tigers completed their sweep of the Nationals last night 8-4 – as well they should have. The Nats were just out of their league in this series. The Tiger were in their shoes once, and will be again some day too. That’s one of the great things about baseball: the natural in which (almost) all teams peak and valley.
- Congratulations to Sammy Sosa on career home run # 600. Insert your corked bat and steroid jokes here.
- The Cubs traded embattled catcher Michael Barrett earlier this week. You didn’t really trhink they’d trade Carlos Zambrano, did you?
- In a move that Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski promises won’t be the last, Wilfredo Ledezma was traded to the Braves. This sounds like a move that was made to allow the tigers some options – for clearing roster spaces with with Rogers & Co. returning.
As of now, it looks like I’ll be making the trip to Atlanta to see the Tigers/Braves game Saturday afternoon. Look for me on FOX. As my dad says "I’ll be the guy wearing the Tiger jersey" which should REALLY narrow it down (Note the sarcasam).
Bloodbath on the Beltway: The Rich Get Richer?
The Tigers mopped the floor with the Nationals 15-1. However, I stopped watching during the 6th inning. Don’t gt me wrong, I love to see the Tigers win – and win decisively at that. I guess after so many years of futility as a Tiger fan, part of me feels sorry for "have nots" of the league, and their fans who pretty much know the game is over before it starts. The Nationals were regarded as probably the worst team in the league before the season started.
It was great to see Sean Casey FINALLY get his first homer of the season. It’s been a long time coming and I’m sure he’s gald to have that proverbial monkey off his back. Hopeully he’ll be able to add a bit of extra power to the Tigers line-up.
In their weekly Power Rankings, cnnsi.com referred to the Tigers as a "rich getting richer" team (or words to that effect) with Kenny Rogers returning from the DL this Friday; thus opening the possibility of trading Mike Maroth to fill another hole in the line-up.
Does anyone else consider the Tigers one of the "have" teams? It wasn’t long ago that they were seen as a "have not". Your opinions?
Who Cares?
Wow, has it really been a month?
Last night, Barry Bonds hit his 747th Home Run. My question is, does anyone REALLY care about him breaking the record at this point, outside of San Francisco, that is? I always thought the best way that upset fans could show their disgust for Bonds was by simply ignoring the pursuit to 756; looks like a lot of people are agreeing with me.
In other news, the Tigers were off last night – with Milwaukee coming into Detroit tonight. It’ll be a bit of a homecoming of sorts for Prince Fielder, whose father Cecil used to play for Tigers. Prince apparently used to hang around the Tiger clubhouse a lot and actually hit a home run at old Tiger Stadium when he was 12! Thie Tigers should have taken more of an interest in this kid when Cecil was shopping him around. Of course, I don;t know of they would have stood a chance in signing him, with the draft and all.
